Boston Mayor Mayor Wu Counters Trump's Warning to Move World Cup Games from City
The mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, implied that the municipality was ready for a dispute with US President Donald Trump regarding his claim that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup tournament games from the stadium in Foxborough, located approximately 35 kilometers southwest of the city.
Mayor Wu appeared on a Boston-based podcast this week to respond to comments from the Trump administration, which had labeled her as "far-left." President Trump had warned that he would contact the head of FIFA if Boston did not "clean up its act."
Much of it is locked down by contract so that no single person, even if they live in the White House, can reverse it.
She continued, "We're in a world where for drama, for power, to test limits ... repeated warnings ... are issued at people and cities who stand their ground and submit or be obedient to a hateful agenda."
Mayor Wu also remarked, "We are going to continue being who we are, and that means, sadly, we are going to be in a conversation that is targeting what Boston stands for." She concluded by emphasizing her support for the city, declaring, "Ten toes down for our city."
Trump's Statements and FIFA's Involvement
Earlier this week, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was photographed alongside Trump at the Gaza summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. Infantino has also been to the Oval Office and presented World Cup and Club World Cup trophies to Trump as presents.
Earlier, President Trump was asked about unrest in South Boston that included a police car being burned. He replied, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Infantino – the head of the organization, who's great."
He continued, "I'd tell him: 'Let's move into another location' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it very easily." The president also specifically targeted Wu, stating, "Boston's mayor is ineffective ... she's far-left, and they're dominating some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"
Past Threats and 2026 World Cup Details
President Trump has previously suggested that he would have the same conversation with Infantino about moving matches from Seattle and San Francisco, which are among the 16 host cities across North America.
The United States is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be held from June 11 to 19 July in the coming year.
