Exceptional Crimson Lightning Captured in the Heavens

A group of photographers based in the island nation have managed to photograph images of red lightning, counted as the least common celestial events on Earth, during which luminous crimson flashes manifest in the atmosphere.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

The photographers had originally set out to capture the galactic core over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the South Island of the country on 11 October, when they chanced upon the unusual spectacle.

They thought they would be lucky to get clear skies that night, but their shooting session transformed into “a night to remember,” a team member commented.

While reviewing his images for a stellar landscape and found he had recorded red sprites,” he noted. “We just could not believe it – we experienced screaming and shouting and all sorts going on in the night.”

Explaining Red Sprites

The scarlet phenomena are bursts of electrical energy in the upper atmosphere, produced by storm systems. In contrast to lightning that strikes downward to the ground, the phenomena ascend towards the higher altitudes, creating appearances that look like pillars, carrots or even marine creatures. The initial image of a this phenomenon was captured – by chance – in 1989, by a team at the University of Minnesota.

Brief and Dreamlike Sightings

The phenomena last for such a short time – persisting for a mere instant – that they are rarely visible to the unaided vision, but a team member had a lucky break. “By chance, I was gazing right at an occurrence when it occurred – an ideal happenstance viewing the correct area of the sky and I saw a momentary scarlet burst,” he explained.

Observing the phenomena was a dream for this individual, an award-winning night scape photographer. “It seems that you are observing an unreal vision, it feels otherworldly … it’s this very deep red colour that is visible for an instant, so it’s really interesting to witness.”

Skill-Based and Artistic Mastery

Photographing a red sprite needs a expertise in advanced imaging techniques, as well as an understanding of atmospheric physics and creative flare, the individual stated. “This is a highly complex form of imaging that’s very rewarding as well.”

One of the other individuals said it was among the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his existence. “I could see the starry river shining above the horizon while these massive crimson strands of energy danced above a electrical event far on the horizon,” he said.

A Unique Photographic Achievement

As far as he knows, there are no other images showing red sprites and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in one frame.

“It represented a unique instance when you know you are observing something that may not recur in your lifetime.”
