Quantic Dream Takes on Multiplayer with Spellcasters Chronicles

The studio behind Detroit: Become Human, known for immersive single-player experiences, is entering a new territory with the upcoming game. Diverging from their earlier successes, this free-to-play team-based spellcaster merges third-person action with strategic components.

How It Works

Users direct Spellcasters based on distinct classes, including defenders or support, and carefully assemble a set of actions from more than fifty magical skills. Additionally, each participant picks a Titan—huge creatures that can change the fight—as a trump card, though team deck synergies contain the true power. Characters can also soar around in the play area, adding a movement feature uncommon in the style.

A Shift in Direction

Companies known for narrative depth switching to social play has become a common pattern. Nonetheless, it would be unjust to ignore this new title solely due to it signifies a change from the studio's past releases. The trailer displays potential for energetic, exciting action, and the developers assert it will stay true to the company's storytelling heritage.

This project represents the innovative drive and technical ambitions that have guided our studio for nearly three decades. We strived to develop a innovative style of gaming experience that blends dynamic combat and tactics, while exploring community-driven narrative. It has been an journey of bold ideas, a moment to enter social and multiplayer experiences, and an endeavor undertaken by a new talented team of professionals within our offices in France and Canada who created this unique world.

The Living World

While particulars remain unclear, the concept of a collective community narrative is intriguing, with the creative lead labeling it a "dynamic, player-influenced environment." Reportedly, this title will include both a "core-loop"—team clashes—and a "macro-loop," which constitutes the collaborative tale.

Quantic Dream acknowledges that this new project might surprise fans, with executives commenting, "Spellcasters Chronicles may astonish our community as it is significantly altered from what we have done previously. But embracing challenges, pushing our limits, investigating fresh approaches of interactivity and plot, and striving for what seems impossible has long been part of our core."

What's Next

The team behind this project will provide a detailed preview during TwitchCon San Diego, with actual play sessions and a question and answer scheduled for the event hours. A closed beta for the game is expected to launch on PC platforms by the close of the year, and potential participants can register through the official website.
