Students Voice Concerns That AI Is Undermining Their Academic Capabilities, Study Finds
According to new investigation, learners are expressing concerns that utilizing artificial intelligence is negatively impacting their ability to learn. A significant number report it renders schoolwork “effortless”, while some say it limits their creativity and impedes them from acquiring new skills.
Widespread Utilization of AI Among Students
An analysis looking at the usage of AI in British educational institutions discovered that only 2% of students aged 13 and 18 reported they did not use AI for their schoolwork, while 80% indicated they regularly employed it.
Unfavorable Influence on Abilities
Despite AI’s popularity, 62% of the learners reported it has had a unfavorable influence on their competencies and growth at their educational institution. One in four of the students agreed that AI “facilitates accessing solutions without independent work”.
An additional 12% indicated AI “restricts my imaginative processes”, while equivalent percentages said they were less inclined to address issues or write creatively.
Nuanced Understanding Among Young People
A professional in machine learning noted that the research was a pioneering effort to analyze how students in the Britain were using AI into their education.
“I am particularly impressed by the nuanced understanding displayed,” the professional said. “For 60% of students to say they are concerned that AI tools encourage copying rather than doing original work, that’s a very deep understanding of what your schoolwork is meant to help you do, and what the pitfalls and benefits are associated with this technology.”
The specialist continued: “Students employing this tool exhibit a remarkably advanced and mature perception of its role in their academics, a fact that is often overlooked when considering their autonomous use of technology in learning environments.”
Scientific Investigations and Broader Worries
These findings are consistent with empirical analyses on the usage of AI in education. One study evaluated neural responses while essay writing among students using AI models and determined: “These findings provoke anxiety about the future scholastic effects of AI dependence and stress the importance of more extensive investigation into its learning functions.”
Roughly half of the numerous respondents polled expressed they were concerned their classmates were “surreptitiously utilizing AI” for studies without their teachers being able to detect it.
Request for Guidance and Constructive Elements
Numerous participants stated that they wanted more guidance from teachers for the correct use of AI and in assessing whether its output was reliable. A program designed to supporting teachers with AI education is being initiated.
“Educators will find certain results particularly noteworthy, especially the extent to which learners anticipate direction from them. Although a technological gap between generations is often assumed, students continue to seek productive AI usage advice from their teachers, which is an encouraging sign.” the professional said.
A school leader noted: “The findings closely reflect what I see in school. Many pupils recognise AI’s value for creativity, revision, and problem-solving but often use it as a shortcut rather than a learning tool.”
Only 31% said they didn’t think AI use had a unfavorable influence on any of their abilities. However, the majority of pupils stated using artificial intelligence assisted them acquire additional competencies, such as 18% who reported it helped them comprehend issues, and 15% who reported it helped them produce “original and superior” thoughts.

When requested to expand, one 15-year-old girl commented: “I’ve gained a better grasp of math concepts, and the technology aids in resolving challenging queries.”
Meanwhile, a male student aged 14 claimed: “My cognitive speed has increased compared to before.”
