UK Expands Methanol Poisoning Warning List with An additional 11 Destinations

Toxic substance warning sign

British government has added eleven more nations to its public advisory register regarding the threats of toxic alcohol toxicity from adulterated spirits.

This updated travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "an international surge in the frequency of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol toxicity.

Only a few weeks ago, officials had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, after several serious cases including the deadly death of six travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that even small amounts of methanol can result in blindness or death within 12–48 hrs.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol commonly used in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not meant for human consumption.

While it is generated during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the purification method.

However in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to cut costs, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is impossible to notice.

Official Recommendations for Travelers

Foreign Office official the minister emphasized that each tourist should be aware of the symptoms of toxic alcohol poisoning.

"While drinking spirits abroad, choose well-known venues and refrain from unlicensed drinks or free shots," the minister advised.
